Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD) Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is a condition where open sores develop on the inner lining of the stomach, small intestine, or esophagus due to the corrosive action of stomach acid. The two most common types of peptic ulcers are gastric ulcers (which occur in the stomach) and duodenal ulcers (which form in the first part of the small intestine). Causes PUD is primarily caused by: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection – This bacterium weakens the stomach’s protective lining, allowing acid to damage the tissue. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) – Long-term use of drugs like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen can irritate and erode the stomach lining. Excess stomach acid production – Conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome can lead to increased acid secretion. Lifestyle factors – Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and stress can worsen ulcer symptoms but are not primary causes. Symptoms Burning or gnawing pain in the upper abdomen Bloating and nausea Heartburn and indigestion Loss of appetite and unexplained weight loss Vomiting (sometimes with blood) or black, tarry stools (indicating bleeding ulcers) Diagnosis & Treatment Diagnosis involves endoscopy, H. pylori testing, and imaging tests. Treatment includes: Antibiotics (for H. pylori infection) Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and H2 blockers (to reduce acid production) Antacids (for symptom relief) Avoiding NSAIDs and adopting a balanced diet Prevention Limit NSAID use and alcohol Quit smoking Manage stress Eat a healthy diet If left untreated, PUD can lead to serious complications like bleeding, perforation, and obstruction.
